La collection Comte Hervé de Toulgoet (1911-2009), Paris
In 2009 in Paris died the renowned Arctiidae-specialist Comte Hervé Le Goazre de Toulgoët-Tréanna at the age of 98 years.
Through the friendly procurement of Mr. Aidas Saldaitis, Vilnius, the Museum Witt has received two boxes of his collection with African Nolidae and Arctiinae. The two boxes contain series of partly determined Nolidae from the Comores and Madagaskar as well as Arctiidae from Rwanda with paratypes of Seydelia turlini Toulgoet and Disparctia varicolor Toulgoet
This demands special reference since the collection with various species from the French Arctiidae-specialist has been auctioned on the auction house DROUOT in 2010 and the collection has therefore been separated. This is a tragic example of a collection and its fate through the improvidence of necessary precautionary measures. Invaluable material has been detached and unfortunately is lost for subsequent generations of science and research work.

On the occasion of Dr. Axel Hausmann’s - custos of the Zoologische Staatsammlung in Munich – visit to Toulgoet he donated numerous boxes of his Arctidae to this custos. These have been included in the collection of that museum and have already been documented by Hausmann in the following typelist. Another great part of the boxes today is in the collection of the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, following an information of Dr. Joel Minet, Paris. Other parts of the collection have been secured and auctioned by Mr. Alessandro Florani from Milan. We can only hope that further parts of the collection will appear on the market. We would encourage each purchaser of parts of the Toulgoet-collection to inform the Museum Witt in order to develop “A list of the residual type-material of the late Comte Hervé de Toulgoet, Paris.”
